Ford sales drop 5% in China during YTD, Lincoln sales up 79% in September




Ford Motor Company and its partners in China have managed to sell a total of 112,902 units in China during September, which the automaker states is "achieving approximately the same volume compared to September 2016". Of the September 2017 total, the Changan Ford passenger vehicle joint venture (JV) has sold 79,700 units, the Jiangling Motors Corp (JMC) JV has sold 25,974 units, and Lincoln has sold 5,721 units, while sales of imported Ford models have hit 1,507 units. On a year-to-date (YTD) basis, Ford has sold 832,761 units in total. Jason Luo, chairman and CEO of Ford China, said, "While our year-over-year sales for September were on a par with September 2016, we achieved strong growth for Kuga during the month, with sales up 42% compared to September last year. Ford Mondeo continued its strong performance and we also continue to see growth in the luxury segment, with Lincoln finishing the month up 79 percent from September last year."

Significance: Data supplied to IHS Markit by the automaker for the same month last year show that Changan Ford sold 84,335 units, so the JV has witnessed a 5.6% year-on-year (y/y) decline in September this year. In the first nine months of 2016, Ford and its partners and brands sold a total of 879,559 units in China, indicating that Ford's YTD sales in 2017 are down 5.3% y/y. However, Ford is achieving sales growth at JMC, of which it owns a third. JMC makes and sells light commercial vehicles and sport utility vehicles (SUVs), and recently it launched a new pick-up. In August, Ford's sales declined 1% y/y in China. Overall, Ford witnessed a solid rise in sales in China in the YTD period last year, and this high base has led to the automaker witnessing y/y declines this year. However, Ford continues to have pockets of growth with SUV models and with the growing pick-up truck trend in China.
