North America weekly chemical rail swings to 7.1% YOY increase




During the week ended 4 February, chemical railcar traffic in North America increased 7.1% year-over-year (YOY) on strong gains in the United States and Canada. Volume totaled 45,581 carloads, up 4.9% from the previous week, according to data released on 8 February by the Association of American Railroads (AAR). For the year to date, chemical railcar traffic in North America is up 0.3%, versus a 5.2% increase in all railcar traffic.

Chemical railcar traffic in the United States contributed 32,714 carloads to the total, up 7.8%  YOY, and up 6.4% from the previous week. For the year to date, US chemical railcar traffic is down 1.3%, versus a 4.7% increase in all railcar traffic.

Canadian chemical rail traffic totaled 12,202, up 9.4% YOY, and up 4.7% from the previous week. For the year to date, Canadian chemical railcar traffic is up 6.2%, versus an 11.5% increase in all railcar traffic.

Chemical railcar traffic in Mexico totaled 665 carloads, a YOY decrease  of 36.1% and a sequential decrease of 38.3%. For the year to date, Mexican chemical railcar traffic is down 13.3%, versus a 13.4% decrease in all railcar traffic.
